Convene Meeting – Marybeth Cunningham, Chairwomen
Ms. Cunningham convened the meeting and introduced Dr. Edelman of Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, who would be leading a presentation on population health. To begin, he provided an overview of clinical integration which he explained is emerging as the predominant approach to managing populations, engaging in value-based contracts and coordinating care among providers. He further reviewed the differences between Clinically Integrated Networks (“CIN”) and Accountable Care Organizations (“ACO”) and the changes to healthcare spending. Dr. Edelman reviewed data concerning healthcare costs per capita in the United States and stated that the United States spends more than twice the average of other developed countries and that healthcare costs in the U.S. have increased drastically over the past several decades.
He then discussed Cleveland Clinics employee health plan teachings, which aim to improve the health of employees. He explained that 70% of chronic conditions in people are caused by social and economic factors and health behaviors. The following are ways to combat this:
1. Build a Culture of Wellness;
2. Support Healthy Life Style Choices;
3. Promote Personal Responsibly; and
4. Use Accurate Objective Data.
There was further Trustee discussion concerning the presentation.
